Appenzellerland: Vacation, vacation, vacation!
A holiday world in a class of its own: great little Appenzellerland. Altmann, Hoher Kasten, Säntis – you can scale the heights in the Alpstein. Four mountain railways carry hikers up to dizzying altitudes and magnificent views. And with no less than 28 mountain inns, the Alpstein is also a gourmet’s paradise.
The gently rolling hills of Appenzell’s Vorderland made it a mecca for wealthy city-dwellers seeking healt of body and spirit in the 19th century, when "stress” and "wellness” were not yet household words. Nowadays their modern counterparts take advantage of the huge range of facilities available in the natural mud baths of Gontenbad or the spas in Unterrechstein, Heiden and Hotel Hof Weissbad.
Visitors have a vast choice: luxury spa hotels offering wellness and health treatment, well-kept country hotels, self-catering apartments, mountain inns or holidays on the farm.
Trundling along in the little red train, you can enjoy the most beautiful aspects of the Appenzellerland. If healthy exercise is what you’re after, the Appenzellerland has something for everyone: a high-altitude training centre at more than 2,500 metres above sea level atop the Säntis, 1200 hiking trails, countless theme paths and a Nordic Fitness Park with 21 routes covering a total length of 350 kilometres. Playing on Gonten’s golf course, you are surrounded by a breathtaking Alpine panorama from the second you tee off. And a very varied network of paths lets bikers and cyclists explore the fascinating region between the Säntis and Lake Constance. As the Appenzellers say: "Sönd willkomm!"
